Accidents at Parliament

8 April 2013

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip wishes ANC MP Sue Van Der Merwe a speedy recovery after she was injured in a violent attack by thugs who broke into her Rondebosch home on Friday night. The Office has been in contact with her and can confirm that she is currently recovering at home after being discharged from hospital. We commend both the South African Police Service and the private security company for their swift reaction to the situation.

We are confident that the police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the culprits are arrested and face the full might of the law. Comrade Van Der Merwe and her family are grateful for the support that they have received since the accident.

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip also wishes a speedy recovery to parliamentary contract cleaners who sustained injuries when a parliamentary lift they were using malfunctioned and dropped several floors on Friday. We welcome the Department of Public Works’ investigation into the accident and hope that measures will be put in place to ensure that such avoidable incidents do not recur.
