ANC Caucus Statement on death of John Gomomo

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus has learned with sadness of the death of one of its Members of Parliament and former leader in the tripartite alliance, John Pumzile Gomomo. Comrade Gomomo passed on yesterday, 22 January, after a long illness.

Gomomo served as an ANC Member of Parliament since 1999. He participated in various parliamentary portfolio committees such as those on Trade & Industry and Agriculture & Land Affairs. At the time of his death comrade Gomomo was the chairperson Public Service & Administration portfolio committee.

A respected working class struggle veteran, Gomomo served the tripartite alliance in various capacities, including as President of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, a fulltime shopsteward of its affiliated National Union of Metalworkers and as a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party.

Comrade Gomomo was a long-standing and dedicated member of the African National Congress. He served the movement in a number of positions, including as a member of the National Executive Committee. He was an embodiment of the tripartite alliance.

Comrade Gomomo will be remembered as a true servant of the people, a disciplined and a selfless cadre of the movement.

The ANC Caucus extends its deepest sympathies to the Gomomo family, his colleagues and comrades.
