ANC dismayed by high level of conflict of interest at Correctional Services

7 June 2017

The ANC Study Group on the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) is dismayed by the levels of conflict of interest and the incompetence of officials of the Department of Correctional Services.

The Department of Correctional Services appeared before SCOPA today to account on matters relating to irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure as well as accruals, receivables and commitments, and conflict of interest by employees who are doing business through tenders with the department.

During the briefing, it has emerged that there are a number of senior officials in the department doing business with the state. We therefore find it quite worrisome that such conflict of interest would be allowed to go unnoticed in the department under the leadership of Commissioner Zach Modise.

Such conduct by government officials undermines parliament as an oversight body to hold the executive accountable. We therefore call upon the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services comrade Michael Masutha to act against the Commissioner and his officials.

SCOPA will work closely with the Anti-Corruption Task Team (ACTT) to ensure that those possibly involved in corrupt activities within the department are brought to book.
