Appointment Of ANC Parliamentary Whips

15 October 2009

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip wishes to announce the new appointments to the positions of Parliamentary Whips in the National Assembly. The appointment of the seven Parliamentary Whips today will bring the total number of ANC Whips in the National Assembly to 35.

The establishment of new government departments, following the elections, has resulted in a situation where some of the Whips had to manage more than one Portfolio Committee, as Parliament had yet to reconfigure the old ratio of Whips-to-MPs. These additional appointments will ensure that there is one Whip for every Portfolio Committee.

The attainment of the goal of one Whip per Committee will ensure effective and efficient political management of Parliament and further enhance the institution’s ability to meet its oversight responsibilities.

Below are the new Parliamentary Whips and the Committees they will manage:

1. Refilwe Mashigo (Joint Budget Committee on Appropriations)
2. Eric Mtshali (Portfolio Committee on Mining);
3. Sivapragus Pillay (Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises)
4. Alinah Rantsolase (Portfolio Committee on Labour)
5. Bheki Radebe (Portfolio Committee on Trade & Industry)
6. Doris Ngcingwane (Portfolio Committee on Public Works)
7. Faith Mbikane (Portfolio Committee on Public Service & Administration)

We congratulate the new appointees and wish them well in their roles.
