KZN ANC Caucus Statement On The State Of Education

24 May 2001

The ANC Caucus in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, is deeply concerned about the current state of education in the province.

In its meeting held in Pietermaritzburg today, the Caucus has instructed its Chief Whip, Mrs Ina Cronje, to arrange an urgent special meeting with the Chief Whip of the IFP and Whips of other parties before next week`s provincial parliamentary sitting in Ulundi. The meeting will have to discuss the ANC concerns around education in the province. Among issues of concern are the return of unspent education funds to provincial treasury while schools are in appalling conditions, unavailability of stationery and textbooks in most schools and alleged poor public relations of Education MEC, Faith Gasa.

The ANC is demanding that the MEC for Education must table an extensive report to the Provincial Legislature sitting next week and that the Whips provide a slot for such a report in the programme. The report (to be debated) will have to give a clear picture on the current situation of education in the province.
