Local Ship Building gets R1.4 billion boost to create sustainable jobs

Our local shipbuilding industry has received a R1.4 billion tender which will create 500 sustainable jobs in the blue economy. This is another strong example of how effective the DTI designation programme is in its support of local manufacturers in the marine industry. Shipbuilding is a key economic driver of the ocean economy.
Two vessels are being built by the Smit Amandla Marine partnership with Damen Shipyards Cape Town. These vessels will carry out supply and support work for the De Beers Group's offshore diamond mining activities in Port Nolloth. This also underpins the decision not to procure vessels abroad when South Africa can build quality ones here at home.
Managing Director at SMIT Amandla Marine, Mr Paul Maclons hailed this as a milestone in the pursuit of a common goal and in support of the government's objectives. It has "sustained jobs, ensured the transfer of skills and competence", while using a South African supply chain process.
The ANC government congratulates the employment policy of both to ensure that at least 70 percent of the workers are local residents living within their own communities.
