Meetings of Parliamentary Committees

28 May 2009

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus notes that parliamentary committees will today (28 May 2009) begin with their fist meetings to, among other things; elect Chairpersons from among their membership. Last week the ANC announced names of Chairpersons it prefers to lead various committees in both the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

These meetings follow the conclusion earlier this week of the process of selecting the organisation’ representatives to various parliamentary committees.

The meetings of Committees in the NA will take place today and Tuesday (2 June 2009) while those in the NCOP will take place during the course of next week. In terms of the National Assembly Rule 131, committees must meet within five working days after the names of members have been announced.

The ANC is currently finalising the consultation process around the allocation of members to the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members\' Interest. We are also working in conjunction with Parliament’s Presiding Officers around the establishment of the two outstanding Committees, which will mirror the new Ministries established in the Presidency.

This thorough and careful process will ensure that at the end we have quality and strong parliamentary structures that place the institutional in a better position to fulfil its constitutional functions.
