MOTION WITHOUT NOTICE
MOTION ON THE PASSING OF THE STRUGGLE VETERAN AND FORMER MP DAN MONTSITSI
The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House
-
notes with deep sadness the passing of the struggle veteran and former ANC MP Dan Montsitsi from COVID-19 complications on Friday 13th August 2021;
-
remembers that Mr Montsitsi was one of the leaders in the Soweto Students Representative Council (SSRC) that was instrumental in coordinating protest actions in Soweto against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools;

remember him as one of the leaders of the South African Student Movement (SASM) in 1974, and was a National Youth Organisation (NYO) Executive Committee member;

recalls that his activism led to him being arrested in June 1977 and he was sentenced to three years three (3) years on Robben Island;

acknowledge that after being released from prison, he became part of the national programme which led to the formation and launch of the United Democratic Front (UDF) on the 20th August 1983 in Cape Town. He also continued with ANC and Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK) underground structures as a Commander within the MK Peter Nchabeleng Unit.

acknowledge that after 1994, he became a Member of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and served as a member of various Standing and Portfolio Committees

conveys its condolences to his entire family and friends.
