21 August 2007

I move without notice, that the House;

That since 2 July, 2007, various parts of our country have experienced different kinds of natural disasters, veldt fires in Provinces of Mpumalanga, Kwa-Zulu - Natal and Free State and floods in the Western Cape;

Further noting,
That the veldt fires have been described as the worst our country has experienced since the 1980`s;

That, more than 49 areas in the Western Cape have been affected by floods, and 38 000 people have been left homeless;

That these disasters have resulted in great suffering to our people especially the poor in the affected areas;

The significant role played by disaster management and working on fire teams, as well as the civil society organizations that came in to lend a hand in an effort to alleviate the pain of those affected;

On communities and municipalities to always take proactive steps aimed at preventing the recurrence of such painful situations;

Its support and solidarity to all the communities who have been affected by the disasters and its condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
