During the State of the Nation Address in February 2016, President Zuma announced that the support provided by Government through the Department of Trade and Industry had attracted investments of over R25-billion in the automotive industry in the past five years and that the investment is beginning to bear fruits. On Tuesday 24 May the President officially launched a new assembly plant built for the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner in Isipingo in Durban. The launch of this new model is part of the implementation of the Nine-Point Plan that he announced in 2015 to grow the economy and create jobs.

It is reported that the investment in the production of the new Hilux and Fortuner vehicle models will support more than 4000 jobs, whilst total employment in the plant already exceeds 8000 jobs. As the President highlighted earlier, this investment demonstrates global motor manufacturer's confidence in SA even during the difficult economic times. ANC welcomes this latest development by the company which proves their commitment to SA by strategically investing in our people. We believe this is a significant contribution towards leading and dealing with serious challenges of unemployment in the country.

I thank you
