Revamped toilets for Malerato Primary School
The ANC believes that all citizens have a right to decent saniation. This is why we commend the ANC government in Gauteng for investing R150 million to ensure that there is proper sanitation at Gauteng schools. Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi officially opened the refurbished toilets at Malerato Primary School in Randfontein.
Earlier this year, education advocacy group Equal Education conducted an audit of over 200 hundred schools across Gauteng and called on MEC Lesufi to solve what it called a sanitation crisis in the province.
Before they were renovated, the toilets at Malerato Primary were falling apart with broken pipes and taps posing a health risk to learners.
The Sanlam Foundation has donated R3 million to renovate and maintain the facilities over a five year period, and Malerato Primary School is one of the six schools to benefit from this programme. We call for such programmes to be implemented by other provinces where schools have sanitation challenges.
