The situation at the SABC

15 June 2009

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus notes with grave concern the deteriorating state of affairs in the South African Broadcasting Corporation. The situation was exacerbated recently by resignations of more than half of the non-executive directors of the Board, which effectively rendered the Board legally incompetent to govern the Corporation.

The Board in its current form cannot meet as it does not form a quorum, and is therefore incapable of taking decisions regarding the management of the institution.

In light of the current dire state of the corporation and the continuing decay of its leadership, Caucus will strongly urge Parliament to intervene and take decisive action to restore order at the broadcaster.

The current situation at the SABC cannot be allowed to continue. Parliament will be failing in its duty if it did not act swiftly to restore the integrity and reputation of this important public institution.
