Statement by the ANC Parliamentary Caucus of the sabotaging of Quorum of the National Assembly by the Democratic Alliance
23 November 2007
The ANC Parliamentary Caucus finds it regrettable that the leader of the of the Democratic Alliance yesterday took the unprecedented step of deliberately sabotaging the quorum of the National Assembly when it had to vote on the Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Bill.
This bill enjoys the full support of members of the ANC Parliamentary Caucus in line with the policies of the African National Congress regarding the emancipation of women.
The act of deliberately sabotaging the quorum of the Assembly goes against established practices and working relationships amongst parties in Parliament.
The ANC Caucus will approach the Speaker to ensure that the Bill is put to the National Assembly again early in next year.
Issued by the Office of the Chief Whip
