Statement by Dorries Dlakude on the Agri-village

2 September 2010

On the 23rd of July 2010, while on their oversight visit to the Free State, the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee visited DIATALWA, a converted concentration camp into an Agri-Village. Diatawala means "falling apples" because it used to be an apple farm, and the 36 Families living in this area were farm labourers.

It is one of the best Agri-Village in the country thanks to the Department of Human Settlements in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for ensuring that land is provided, to build homes for our people and promote Local Economic Development by providing our people with chicken shelters and 200 Chickens, 240 Cattles, and 120 Dairy Cattles are underway.

Seven (75m²) 3 and 4 bedroom houses with sanitation were completed. The best rest were still under construction and will be completed by the end of August. Crèche, Primary and Secondary Schools are underway, and the road leading to this village is under construction.

Both departments are working together tirelessly to ensure that the dignity of our people is restored by: Advancing and promoting the Rural Housing Program Rural development and ensuring that our people share the wealth of the land they work on.

I thank you!
