Statement on Establishment of School Sport
SG Mmusi

8 November 2011

It gives me great pleasure to attest to this House that some of the projected intentions of Polokwane Conference have been meaningfully executed and a case in point is the establishment of school sport whereby two Departments namely Basic Education and Sport and Recreation and their respective Ministers did indeed institute and approve the planning framework and further developed an action plan on 22 June 2011.

On the 23rd June 2011, the interdepartmental task team met to consolidate the document and agreed on the implementation plan. As we speak today, a plethora and multiplicity of aspects have been covered. They include amongst others, School sport launch which took place on 5 November 2011. The Launch included:

  • Exhibition games targeting 600 primary school leaners in football, netball, rugby, athletics and volleyball.
  • A Gymnastrada display
  • Ceremonial signing of the MoU by the Ministers
  • 1400 key stakeholders and Love Life volunteers.
