Statement by Zou Kota-Fredericks on child victim of rape

20 November 2007

Madam Speaker

On the 5th of November 2006 a girl child was raped and set alight at Blue Downs.

On the 5th of November 2007 a year after this ordeal the community of Blue Downs gathered at the school hall to celebrate the successful recovery of this miracle child.  Her resilience and bravery can never be forgotten – for this she was named ‘The little Rock’.

The ANC thanks in particular the community for the support given to this family from day one. This community put its resources together and placed this child in a private school for her safety.  That is why on that day they launched a trust under the name ‘The little Rock Trust’.

The event was attended by the people from all over the Western Cape and across political affiliations.

As we, on 25 November, begin the annual campaign of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, we call upon all communities to unite in support of similar victims of crime and in particular to uproot the scourge of violence against innocent children in our communities.

Forward with the caring ANC government, forward.

I thank you.
