UN`s Declaration Of The Nelson Mandela International Day
11 November 2009
The Office of the ANC Chief Whip congratulates the United Nations` General Assembly for adopting a resolution declaring 18 July of every year the Nelson Mandela International Day, in recognition of our first democratic President`s contribution to peace and democracy.
The celebration of the Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July - the birthday of Madiba - was initiated this year by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 Campaign. The Day was later endorsed by President Jacob Zuma during his State of the Nation Address, encouraging all South Africans to spend time doing something good within the communities they live.
To mark this historic day, the ANC Parliamentary Caucus deployed Members of Parliament to lead millions of our people in their communities around the country in undertaking various activities for 67-minutes, signifying the 67 years that our legendary icon spent serving humanity.
The declaration of the UN General Assembly affirms the manner in which this important day touched the international community and, once again, recognises the immense contribution Madiba made to humanity across the globe.
The Parliamentary Caucus will continue annually to be at the forefront of the Nelson Mandela Day activities, working with various communities to inculcate moral values and build a caring society through noble causes of ordinary South Africans.
