The ANC Study Group on Sport, Arts and Culture extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, teammates and the broader sporting fraternity following the tragic passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns, and Luqobo Makwedini, former South Africa Under-18 rugby prop and player for French club AS Béziers Hérault.
The passing of these two talented young athletes is a devastating loss to South African sport. Jayden Adams proudly represented our nation on the international stage, including at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Luqobo Makwedini was building a promising rugby career abroad, carrying the hopes of South African rugby with distinction.
Their dedication, discipline and commitment to excellence inspired many young South Africans to pursue their dreams through sport. Their contributions to football and rugby will not be forgotten, and their legacies will continue to inspire future generations.
During this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with their loved ones, teammates and the entire South African sporting community. May they find strength and comfort in the memories of two remarkable young men whose lives, though cut tragically short, made a lasting impact on our nation.
May their souls rest in eternal peace.
