ANC STUDY GROUP STATEMENT ON THE DEMARCHE OF US AMBASSADOR

12 March 2026

The ANC Study Group on International Relations welcomes and supports the decision by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola to formally demarche the United States Ambassador to South Africa, Leo Brent Bozell following his recent remarks made in Hermanus.

Diplomatic relations between sovereign states are guided by mutual respect, adherence to established diplomatic norms, and a commitment to constructive engagement. It is therefore concerning when representatives of foreign governments make public remarks that may be perceived as undiplomatic or inconsistent with these long-standing principles of international conduct.

The ANC Study Group affirms that South Africa’s democracy is robust, sovereign and guided by its Constitution and the will of its people. As such, matters concerning our domestic affairs must be approached with the necessary diplomatic sensitivity and respect for our national sovereignty.

We support the position articulated by Minister Lamola that relations between South Africa and the United States are not one-sided. The partnership between our countries has historically been built on dialogue, cooperation and mutual benefit. It is therefore important that this relationship continues to be conducted in a manner that reflects equality, respect and the shared interests of our peoples.

South Africa remains committed to constructive engagement with the United States and all international partners, guided by the principles of multilateralism, non-interference and respect for the sovereignty of nations. At the same time, we will not hesitate to defend our national dignity and democratic institutions when necessary.

The ANC Study Group encourages continued diplomatic engagement to ensure that the strong historical relations between South Africa and the United States are preserved and strengthened in a spirit of mutual respect.

Issued by the Whip of the ANC Study Group on International Relations and Cooperation, Cde Andisiwe Kumbaca
