AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS PARLIAMENTARY STUDY GROUP ON BASIC EDUCATION STATEMENT ON THE VAAL SCHOLAR TRANSPORT ACCIDENT

19 January 2025

The ANC Parliamentary Study Group on Basic Education has learned with deep sorrow and shock of the tragic scholar transport accident that occurred today in the Vaal, involving learners travelling to school.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the learners who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries. This devastating incident has robbed families and communities of young lives full of promise and has once again highlighted the urgent need to strengthen safety measures in scholar transport across the country.

The ANC calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragedy. Those responsible for any negligence must be held accountable. The safety of learners must never be compromised.

We further urge the Department of Basic Education and provincial transport authorities to intensify oversight and compliance checks on scholar transport operators, ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy, drivers are properly licensed, and safety regulations are strictly enforced.

The ANC Study Group will continue to advocate for safer and more reliable transport for all learners, particularly those in rural and township communities who rely heavily on scholar transport to access education.

No child should lose their life on the way to school.
