STATEMENT ON THE ELECTION OF MINISTER NOMAKHOSAZANA METH AS VICE-CHAIRPERSON OF THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION (ILO) GOVERNING BODY

The ANC Study Group on Employment and Labour extends its heartfelt congratulations to Comrade Nomakhosazana Meth, MP, the Minister of Employment and Labour, on her historic election to the prestigious position of Vice-Chairperson of the Government Group (GG) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body, on Friday, 12 June 2026.

Minister Meth’s election to this global platform takes place during the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. It comes at a monumental period as South Africa steers its G20 Presidency and marks over three decades since rejoining the global family of the ILO.

This election is not just a personal milestone for Comrade Meth; it is a notable vote of confidence by the international community and the African continent in her exceptional leadership capabilities, deep-rooted commitment to social justice, and extensive public administration experience.

As Vice-Chairperson, Minister Meth will play a decisive role in shaping global labour market governance. Her mandate comes at a critical juncture when developing nations are navigating the complexities of the digital economy and the urgent necessity of a Just Transition that protects jobs while fostering green economic growth.
