ANC STUDY GROUP ON INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COOPERATION AFRICA DAY STATEMENT

25 May 2026

Today, as we commemorate Africa Day, the ANC Study Group on International Relations and Cooperation joins millions across the continent and the diaspora in celebrating the resilience, unity, liberation and renewal of Africa.

Africa Day is not merely a symbolic commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now the African Union. It is a reaffirmation of the historic mission of the African people: the pursuit of dignity, sovereignty, peace, development and continental unity.

This year’s commemoration takes place at a defining moment for the African continent and the world. As Africa navigates complex geopolitical shifts, economic pressures, climate challenges and persistent inequalities, we are reminded that the future of our continent will be determined by the strength of African solidarity, progressive leadership and collective action.

As the ANC Study Group on International Relations and Cooperation, we reaffirm the values of progressive internationalism, Pan-Africanism, anti-imperialism and South-South cooperation that have historically guided South Africa’s foreign policy and the international outlook of the African National Congress.

We recognise that the struggle for Africa’s total emancipation is ongoing. Political freedom must be matched by economic justice, industrial development, technological advancement, food security, youth empowerment and the meaningful participation of women in all spheres of society.

Africa’s rise will not be achieved through political declarations alone. It requires bold economic transformation, investment in infrastructure, innovation, beneficiation of natural resources, regional value chains and the empowerment of African entrepreneurs and young professionals to participate meaningfully in the global economy.

As representatives of a democratic South Africa born out of struggle and sacrifice, we carry a historic responsibility to ensure that Africa’s future is shaped by ethical leadership, inclusive growth, innovation and social justice.

Africa must not remain a source of raw materials for the world while its people remain excluded from prosperity. The time has come for Africa to fully leverage its vast human capital, natural resources and intellectual capacity for the benefit of its own people.

On this Africa Day, we call upon the people of the continent, particularly the youth, to actively participate in shaping Africa’s future through education, entrepreneurship, public service, activism and continental cooperation. The dream of a prosperous, peaceful and united Africa depends on the active involvement of its people.

The ANC Study Group on International Relations and Cooperation remains committed to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and ensuring that South Africa’s international engagements continue to advance the aspirations of the African continent and the developmental needs of our people.

May Africa rise in unity, dignity and shared prosperity.
