ANC STUDY GROUP STATEMENT ON SOUTH AFRICAN’S ELECTION TO THE AU PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL

16 February 2026

The African National Congress Study Group warmly welcomes South Africa’s election to the African Union Peace and Security Council for a two-year term.

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) is the standing decision-making body of the African Union which is mandated to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts on the African continent.

This election is a clear affirmation of South Africa’s principled commitment to the promotion of peace, stability, multilateralism and collective security on our continent. It reflects the confidence of African states in South Africa’s longstanding contribution to conflict prevention, mediation, peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction.

Guided by the values of Pan Africanism, solidarity and progressive internationalism, South Africa will continue to advance African-led solutions to African challenges, strengthen early-warning and conflict prevention mechanisms and champion the protection of civilians, especially women and children, in conflict situations.

The ANC Study Group reiterates its full support for South Africa’s role on the Council and reaffirms our commitment to building a peaceful, stable and resilient Africa that is able to realise its developmental aspirations.

The ANC in Parliament will exercise oversight to ensure that our participation on the Council advances a more resilient and united Africa.

Issued by the Whip of the ANC Study Group on International Relations and Cooperation, Cde Andisiwe Kumbaca
