The ANC Parliamentary Caucus has learned with shock and sadness of the tragic passing of African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament, Comrade Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe. The incumbent Deputy President of ANC Women’s Legue sadly passed away on Saturday, 17 May 2024.
Comrade Lungi, as she was affectionately known to her peers, cut her political teeth in the dusty streets of KwaMashu in the 1980s and early 90s when the province of KwaZulu-Natal was engulfed by vicious political violence. She joined the United Democratic Front (UDF) and was elected to lead the peace and stability committee. She joined the ANC where she led in numerous positions.
She was deployed to Parliament first in the fifth term when she held the position of Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises. She led the Committee when it conducted the oversight inquiry into allegations of state capture at Eskom.
She was deployed to Parliament again in the seventh term after the May 2024 elections as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism. She executed her roles with excellence, honour and dignity. She also contributed immensely to the work of the ANC Caucus as one of the senior leaders of the movement.
The ANC Caucus extends our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and comrades during this difficult time of loss.
The untimely passing of comrade Lungi leaves a void within structures of the ANC Parliamentary Caucus and the ANC as a whole. With her departure, the ANC has been robbed of one of its most committed and selflessness cadres.
May her revolutionary spirit rest in peace.
