ANC Caucus welcomes announcements by President Ramaphosa to move the country to alert level 1

1 March 2021

The ANC in Parliament welcomes the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to move the country Alert Level 1 of lockdown. We appreciate this decisive move by government as it will allow more economic activity, which will greatly assist in restoring the livelihoods of our people and reviving our economy.

We further welcome and commend government on the swift move in securing an additional 80 000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, which arrived in South Africa yesterday, 27 February 2021. This demonstrates government’s ongoing efforts to protect the lives of our frontline workers and reaching herd immunity to protect our people. The vaccination of more than 67 000 health care workers who are on the frontline of the fight against Covid-19 gives us confidence in the leadership of our government and brings hope to many South Africans that we will defeat this virus.

The ANC Caucus supports the expansion of vaccination sites across the country which will enable the fast tracking of the vaccine rollout programme. We also appreciate and support the ongoing agreements with Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer and the COVAX facility to secure more Covid-19 vaccines. This shows that our government prioritizes the health and safety of South Africans.

As the country moves to alert level 1 and restrictions on gatherings are eased, we urge South Africans to be cautious and not let their guard down, the country is still faced with a deadly pandemic. We encourage everyone to adhere to the safety measures; wear your mask, wash your hands regularly, sanitize and practise social distancing.

Issued by the Office of the Chief Whip, Comrade Pemmy Majodina
